An Assessment of Potential Detectors to Monitor the Man-made Orbital Debris Environment
Observations using NORAD radar showed that man made debris exceeds the natural environment for large objects. For short times (a few days to a few weeks) after solid rocket motor (SRM) firings in LEO, man made debris in the microparticle size range also appears to exceed the meteoroid environment. The properties of the debris population between these size regimes is currently unknown as there has been no detector system able to perform the required observations. The alternatives for obtaining data on this currently unobserved segment of the population are assessed
Applications of a High-Altitude Powered Platform (HAPP)
A list of potential uses for the (HAPP) and conceptual system designs for a small subset of the most promising applications were investigated. The method was to postulate a scenario for each application specifying a user, a set of system requirements and the most likely competitor among conventional aircraft and satellite systems. As part of the study of remote sensing applications, a parametric cost comparison was done between aircraft and HAPPS. For most remote sensing applications, aircraft can supply the same data as HAPPs at substantially lower cost. The critical parameters in determining the relative costs of the two systems are the sensor field of view and the required frequency of the observations being made. The HAPP is only competitive with an airplane when sensors having a very wide field of view are appropriate and when the phenomenon being observed must be viewed at least once per day. This eliminates the majority of remote sensing applications from any further consideration
Cu-O network-dependent core-hole screening in low-dimensional cuprate systems: a high-resolution X-ray photoemission study
We present an experimental study of the dynamics of holes in the valence bands of zero-, one-, and two-dimensional undoped model cuprates, as expressed via the screening of a Cu 2p core hole. The response depends strongly upon the dimensionality and the details of the Cu-O-Cu network geometry and clearly goes beyond the present theoretical state-of-the-art description within the three-band d-p model
Discriminating signal from background using neural networks. Application to top-quark search at the Fermilab Tevatron
The application of Neural Networks in High Energy Physics to the separation
of signal from background events is studied. A variety of problems usually
encountered in this sort of analyses, from variable selection to systematic
errors, are presented. The top--quark search is used as an example to
illustrate the problems and proposed solutions.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, psfi
The unusual electronic structure of the "pseudo-ladder" compound CaCu2O3
Experimental and theoretical studies of the unoccupied electronic structure
of CaCu2O3 single crystals have been performed using polarization-dependent
x-ray absorption spectroscopy and band structure calculations. The measured
hole distribution shows an unusual large number of holes in orbitals parallel
to the interlayer direction which is in agreement with the theoretical
analysis. CaCu2O3 deviates significantly from the standard pd-sigma cuprate
picture. The corresponding strong interlayer exchange is responsible for the
missing spin gap generic for other two-leg ladder cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures include
Vortex dynamics and states of artificially layered superconducting films with correlated defects
Linear resistances and -characteristics have been measured over a wide
range in the parameter space of the mixed phase of multilayered a-TaGe/Ge
films. Three films with varying interlayer coupling and correlated defects
oriented at an angle from the film normal were investigated.
Experimental data were analyzed within vortex glass models and a second order
phase transition from a resistive vortex liquid to a pinned glass phase.
Various vortex phases including changes from three to two dimensional behavior
depending on anisotropy have been identified. Careful analysis of
-characteristics in the glass phases revealed a distinctive and
-dependence of the glass exponent . The vortex dynamics in the
Bose-glass phase does not follow the predicted behavior for excitations of
vortex kinks or loops.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 table
Novel multiple sclerosis susceptibility loci implicated in epigenetic regulation
We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility in German cohorts with 4888 cases and 10,395 controls. In addition to associations within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region, 15 non-MHC loci reached genome-wide significance. Four of these loci are novel MS susceptibility loci. They map to the genes L3MBTL3, MAZ, ERG, and SHMT1. The lead variant at SHMT1 was replicated in an independent Sardinian cohort. Products of the genes L3MBTL3, MAZ, and ERG play important roles in immune cell regulation. SHMT1 encodes a serine hydroxymethyltransferase catalyzing the transfer of a carbon unit to the folate cycle. This reaction is required for regulation of methylation homeostasis, which is important for establishment and maintenance of epigenetic signatures. Our GWAS approach in a defined population with limited genetic substructure detected associations not found in larger, more heterogeneous cohorts, thus providing new clues regarding MS pathogenesis
How Communication and Control Processes Improve Quality
In order to achieve excellence, an organization should use two key
instruments—quality and an effi cient and effective communication process amongst
all employees—so it can attain quality management. This chapter aims to examine
whether organizational communication and quality are interrelated, in order to answer
the following question: Is it necessary to improve communication within an organization
so that quality management can be effi ciently and effectively pursued? For this
purpose, data were collected through the administration of a questionnaire to the staff
of a Portuguese public organization. The fi ndings showed that, in this organization,
communication among employees of various sectors is satisfactory and that there is
mutual help between them in order to improve the organizational performance
Direct Measurement of the Top Quark Mass at D0
We determine the top quark mass m_t using t-tbar pairs produced in the D0
detector by \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV p-pbar collisions in a 125 pb^-1 exposure at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We make a two constraint fit to m_t in t-tbar -> b W^+bbar
W^- final states with one W boson decaying to q-qbar and the other to e-nu or
mu-nu. Likelihood fits to the data yield m_t(l+jets) = 173.3 +- 5.6 (stat) +-
5.5 (syst) GeV/c^2. When this result is combined with an analysis of events in
which both W bosons decay into leptons, we obtain m_t = 172.1 +- 5.2 (stat) +-
4.9 (syst) GeV/c^2. An alternate analysis, using three constraint fits to fixed
top quark masses, gives m_t(l+jets) = 176.0 +- 7.9 (stat) +- 4.8 (syst)
GeV/C^2, consistent with the above result. Studies of kinematic distributions
of the top quark candidates are also presented.Comment: 43 pages, 53 figures, 33 tables. RevTeX. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
